Photographed for a months-long reporting project about Marine and Army artillery veterans who served in Iraq and Syria during the campaign to defeat the Islamic State from 2016 to 2017. Many U.S. troops who fired vast numbers of artillery shells against the Islamic State developed mysterious, life-shattering mental and physical problems.
